Q: Can the MAX Drive card be used as a standard GameCube memory card?
The MAX Drive card doubles as a transfer device and a GameCube memory card. You will be able to use it to transfer game saves between your GameCube and PC, and you can also save all of your favorite games on it.
Q: I’ve copied some GameCube saves onto my MAX Drive, but the PC software doesn’t display them?
You will need to “prepare” the saves for PC access first, using the MAX Drive GameCube software. To do this, follow the steps below.
"Prepare" saves for PC access:
(Using the supplied Max Drive GameCube software.)
- Insert the Max Drive memory card into either GameCube memory card port.
A list of files contained on the Max Drive memory card will be displayed.
- Press the “A” button on your GameCube controller.
This
will prepare all the files so they can be accessed on your PC using the Max Drive PC software.
Please Note: At this point, BOTH the GameCube and the PC will be able to read the contents of the Max Drive card – however if any changes are made to the card using either the GameCube memory card browser screen or any of your games, then the Max Drive card must be prepared for use on the PC once more.
- Run the Max Drive PC software.
- Using the supplied link cable, insert your Max Drive into a USB port on the PC (Important: make sure your Max Drive is not plugged into your GameCube’s memory card slot when data transfer is taking place, or the PC may fail to recognize it). The saves you have prepared for PC transfer should be viewable in the “CUBE” window.
- Using the Max Drive PC software, drag the GameCube game save from the “CUBE” window to the “LOCAL” window. The save will now appear in the “LOCAL” window under “Saves”.
- Drag the game save out of the PC Database and onto your Windows desktop or into a folder. The file will be copied to the location of your choice.
Q: Can MAX Drive run GameCube homebrew programs?
No, only MAX Drive Pro can run GameCube software programmed by amateur developers. For more details on MAX Drive Pro and Datel’s full range of GameCube products, please visit the shop area of codejunkies.com.
Q: I have added or removed some files on my MAX Drive memory cartridge using the USB cable and MAX Drive PC software. I have inserted the MAX Drive memory cartridge into my GameCube running the default memory cartridge browser and it is asking me to format the cartridge; why?
After updating the MAX Drive memory cartridge on your PC, you will need to use the MAX Drive GameCube software to “prepare” the MAX Drive cartridge so that it can be used again on your GameCube. To do this, follow the steps below:
- Make sure you have installed the PC software that came with your Max Drive, as detailed in the previous section.
- On your PC monitor you will see two windows: “LOCAL” on the left and “CUBE” on the right. In the right window you’ll see any game saves that are stored on your Max Drive memory card. If this is the first time you’ve used Max Drive, this window will be empty.
- In the left window you’ll see a list of all saves that are stored on your PC’s hard drive (in the “Saves” folder).
- Click on the “+” symbol in the “LOCAL” window next to the word “Saves” to explore all the saves associated with an individual game. Clicking on “-“ collapses the directory.
- Hover the mouse over the name of an individual game save to display a description entered by its creator (eg “everything unlocked”), the size of the file, the date it was created, and more. You can edit the game save name and description here if you wish. Click “OK” when you’re done.
- Now try dragging and dropping files between your Max Drive memory card and your PC database using your mouse.
- In either window you can also delete saves by right clicking on them, then selecting “Delete File”.
- After you have finished updating your Max Drive memory card you must unplug it from the USB slot on your PC and then insert it into either GameCube memory card port with the Max Drive GameCube software already loaded. The Max Drive GameCube software will prepare the Max Drive memory card so that it can be used as a standard GameCube memory card.
Q: What is the MAX Drive system file?
The MAX Drive system file is essential to the correct operation of the MAX Drive memory cartridge. The file uses 25 blocks, leaving you with 994 free blocks. The MAX Drive system file must NOT be deleted.
Q: Help…I’ve deleted my MAX Drive system file?
You must format the MAX Drive Memory cartridge using the MAX Drive GameCube software.
Q: How do I format the MAX Drive memory cartridge?
In the unlikely event that your MAX Drive memory cartridge ever becomes corrupt (the most likely method of this happening is if you remove the device while it’s being “prepared” for use – either by the GameCube or the PC) – or if you accidentally delete the MAX Drive system file you will need to reformat the cartridge before it can be used again.
To format the card, hold down the START button on the GameCube controller and press the Z button, select YES when prompted by pressing the “A” button and the cartridge will be reformatted and can then be used as before.
Please Note: You must only format your MAX Drive card using the MAX Drive GameCube software. A special format is used that enables both your PC and GameCube to access the MAX Drive memory cartridge.
Q: How do I transfer game saves onto my Max Drive card using the PC software?

That save is now on your Max Drive card and ready to be either transferred onto a separate GameCube memory card or loaded into your game right off of the Max Drive card.
Q: How do I transfer game saves onto my Max Drive from my GameCube memory card?
To transfer game saves from your GameCube memory card onto your GameCube Max Drive card please follow these instructions.
While the GameCube is turned off, insert your GameCube memory card in slot A and your GameCube Max Drive card into slot B. Then, turn on your GameCube WITHOUT a game in it.

Once you have done this you will see icons for all of your game saves on the left hand side (this is your memory card in slot A). On the right hand side you will see one icon; this is the GameCube Max Drive configuration, DO NOT DELETE IT.
From the left hand side, choose a save which you would like to copy onto the Max Drive, highlight it and then press the A button on your GameCube controller. You will have three options, MOVE, COPY and ERASE, you want to choose COPY, and then choose YES to confirm.
