- Datel Technical Support Team
Q: I just purchased the PS2 AR MAX EVO and it did not come with any AR MAX hardware; why?
The new versions of the Action Replay MAX (version 3.30 and higher) do not require the standard AR MAX hardware to function. The new technology that we have allows you to use your Action Replay MAX without having to keep the AR MAX hardware in memory card port 2 on your PS2 console thus allowing you more space to store game saves, codes, etc. For this reason, the latest version of the AR MAX does not come with the standard AR MAX hardware.
Q: Can the AR MAX EVO play any other form besides DivX formatted video files?
The AR MAX EVO Edition will ONLY play DivX form; however it comes with a free PC application that will convert other forms of video into DivX, allowing you to play all of the most popular video file types on your PS2.
Q: Can the AR MAX EVO play any other type of ROM’s besides MegaDrive / Genesis?
The AR MAX EVO Edition will only be able to play copyright-free public domain MegaDrive and Genesis ROM’s.
Q: Where can I get MegaDrive or Genesis ROM’s?
Although the AR MAX EVO will allow you to burn and play MegaDrive and Genesis ROMs on your PlayStation 2, we do not provide ROMs to our users.
There are many ROMs created by programming enthusiasts that can be found on the internet and downloaded free of charge. Please be aware that Datel does not condone the illegal use of pirated commercial ROMs.
Commercial software would be considered any game that was created and sold by a videogame manufacturer, and they are protected by intellectual copyright laws. We highly recommend only downloading ROMs which are distributed for free by the games author.
"Important Legal Information:
Copying of any video games for any system is illegal and is strictly prohibited by domestic and international intellectual properly laws. “Back-up” or “archival” copies are not authorized and are not necessary to protect your software. Violators will be prosecuted. This video game is not designed for use with any unauthorized copying device or any unlicensed accessory. Use of any such device will invalidate your product warranty.”
Q: Will I be able to copy videos onto a DivX formatted DVD-R instead of a CD-R?
Unfortunately, no. Only properly encoded DivX videos which have been burned on a DivX formatted CD-R will play using the AR Max EVO.
Q: How do I download the updated AR MAX codelist onto my EVO Drive and use it with my AR MAX?
First ensure you have the latest version of the MAX/EVO Drive PC software installed on your PC. You can get this from the “Downloads” section of www.codejunkies.com. Also, make sure the switch on the side of your MAX/EVO Drive is in the “Unlocked” position, and then just simply follow these steps below.
Please Note: In order to update your AR MAX with some of the more recent code lists, version 3.33 or higher is required. If you are using an older version of the AR MAX software, we would recommend upgrading to the latest version of the software.
Updating AR MAX Codes via EVO Drive:
PART 1 (PC):
- Insert the MAX/EVO Drive into a free USB port on your PC.
- Open up the MAX/EVO Drive software on your PC
- Click on the “AR MAX CODELIST” button in the upper left hand corner.
- Follow the prompts to download the codelist onto your MAX/EVO Drive.
PART 2 (PS2):

(Some PC’s may require you to actually stop the drive before removing it from the PC)
- Insert the MAX/EVO Drive into one of the USB ports on your PS2 console.
- Insert the AR MAX int the PlayStation 2.
- The new code list should automatically be recognized.

If the MAX Media Creator disc can not be read by your computer or if you have misplaced the disc please use the link below to download the PS2 MAX Media Creator software directly from our website.
Software & Updates: CodeJunkies.com downloads
Q: When I attempt to install the PC software I get the following error message: “C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT”.
This is an issue with certain files which are missing from the “windows\system32” folder of your PC. Since this is an issue with your PC settings we cannot assist you, however we have found a similar problem listed in Microsoft’s support section of their website and you can use this link to receive additional info/help on this issue.
Please Note: If the solution provided here does not correct your problem you will need to contact either Microsoft or the manufacturer of your PC for additional assistance.
Q: I burned a disc with MAX Media Creator and it will not run in my PS2 console; what should I do?
- Ensure that you are using CD-R media, and not CD-RW or DVD-R media.
- Burned CD’s will only be able to be read by AR Max Media player, they will not boot in the PS2 without first booting the Max Media Player Software.
If Max Media Player still does not detect the CD:
- Make sure you have burned the disc using the latest version of Max Media Creator software. Standard burning software is not able to properly burn a PlayStation 2 formatted disc. If you are in fact using the Max Media Creator software and the disc is still not loading in your PS2 please forward us all available information on your CD Writer (i.e. model, brand, etc.) using the "Still Need Help?" option on this site.
The latest version of Max Media Creator software is located in the ‘Downloads’ section of www.codejunkies.com
Please Note: New in version 1.22+, when you click the "Create" button and see the CD writing options, you'll notice a new option called "Compatibility Mode". When you first burn a disc you should use "Normal Compatibility". This mode should work on most CD/DVD writers. If your discs made in this mode do not work with MAX Media Player then try burning the disc again with "Alternative Compatibility 1" selected.
Again, if this disc doesn't work, try "Alternative Compatibility 2". If you are in fact using the Max Media Creator software and the disc is still not loading in your PS2 please forward us all available information on your CD Writer (i.e. model, brand, etc.) using the "Still Need Help?" option on this site.
Q: I'm experiencing one of the following problems....
I am not able to add/delete files to/from my MAX/EVO drive.
The PS2 does not detect files placed on my Max EVO Drive.
I am getting an error message when trying to add files to my MAX/EVO drive.
It may appear as though files are transferring onto the EVO Drive while it is plugged into your PC however, if it is locked those files will not be saved once the EVO Drive is removed from the USB Port.
The EVO Drive contains a data security lock feature for the safety of your saves. To add items to or delete items from the EVO Drive, you will need to be sure that the 'lock switch' (located on the side of the EVO Drive) is in the 'unlocked' position.
Q: OOPS!!!! I've broken my AR MAX EVO disc; how can I purchase a replacement?
