- Datel Technical Support Team
Q: What is ActionReplay Max?
Action Replay MAX is Datel's new cheat code system and media player for PlayStation 2. Action Replay MAX lets you enhance your PS2 games with gamebusting cheat codes such as infinite lives, unlock hidden characters, open all levels, and much, much more. The revolutionary new media player feature means that you can take digital music, movies and even retro games from your PC and play them on a normal PS2 via CD-R or USB flash drive. Action Replay MAX also includes a multi-region DVD movie player and advanced game save features.
Q: What's the difference between Action Replay MAX and the EVO Edition?
They use exactly the same Action Replay MAX codes and have the same features, but EVO Edition also comes bundled with a USB flash drive allowing you to transfer codes, saves, roms and media files between a computer and PS2.
Q: What is an (M) code?
These codes are called "Master Codes" and they MUST BE ON for Action Replay to function properly. Every game title we have created Action Replay codes for will have an (M) code. When manually entered, the (M) code must be the first cheat entered above all others. The "(M)" codes cannot be turned off or deleted.
Q: I have typed in my (M) code and it is not appearing on screen within the game title.
Action Replay MAX does require an (M) code to be entered into the system. However, as it requires to be switched on for all/any of the codes to function we have removed the (M) code title so that this important code cannot be tampered with (edited, changed or switched off) in any way.
Q: Can I use codes from my old Action Replay V2?
No, codes are not transferable between Action Replay MAX and the old V2, as AR V2 Playstation 2 codes consist of 16 digits and AR MAX codes are 13 digits long. Because of new features like game auto-detect and expert mode, it was necessary to change the structure of our codes for Action Replay MAX.
Q: Why will a certain game refuse to load, or crash/freeze?
You may have too many cheat codes activated. Try cutting down on the amount you are trying to use. Also make sure you have entered the "M" code correctly.
Q: I am trying to enter US codes for my US games using my European version of AR MAX, but the game and cheats disappear after I have entered them?
The European version of AR MAX is not designed to be functional with US codes. If you have a US console then you will require a US version of AR MAX for it to function correctly. Do not try to enter codes from another region, or you may have to reset your AR MAX settings (see next question for instructions).
Q: I managed to enter the game title and (M) code for my game using cheats codes found on the Codejunkies web site, however when I went back into the AR MAX game list the game title I had just entered was not there. When I try and add the game again it tells me that the game already exists. What is happening?
It sounds like you have entered codes from the wrong region. Please check that you have entered the correct codes for your version of the game. UK codes are not compatible with the US AR MAX disc or US games, just as US codes are not compatible with the European disc or European games. If you are entering codes designed for a game from a foreign region eg, UK codes on a US disc, they will not appear within the game list. If this has been done you must then reset your AR MAX and all manually inputted codes and settings will be lost.
If the wrong codes have been entered then you may need to reset the AR MAX settings on your memory card. Please note this will lose any other information manually entered onto your AR MAX codelist and restore it to factory settings. To reset your AR MAX, load up the disc with your memory card in memory slot 1. After the white "Playstation 2" logo appears, hold down L1, L2, R1, R2, Start and Select for a few seconds before the "loading graphics" screen appears. A prompt will appear asking if you would like to reset - select "yes" to reset and allow the AR MAX to load as usual. Please note this will delete all codes which have been manually entered on your AR MAX (you will still be able to access the original codes that came preloaded with your AR MAX).
Q: How do I make a folder containing cheat codes appear?
To create a folder you will need to type in a code. These should be posted with the folder title. Insert as you would a cheat title, except with the folder title, and input the code given. Once you enter one of the cheats to go inside that folder, the folder (and the cheat within it) will appear.
Q: Can I change the title of an individual ActionReplay code?
Yes, you can give the individual cheats any title you see fit. However, Action Replay MAX does require a (M)/master code to be entered into the system. However, as it requires to be switched on for all/any of the codes to function we have removed the (M) code title so that this important code cannot be tampered with (edited changed or switched off) in any way.
Q: Why does the Action Replay MAX tell me that the code I entered in is for another game, or that it is an invalid code?
If you are receiving this type of error message then you need to make sure you are entering the codes exactly the way they appear on our web site. Codes will only contain the number 0 ("zero") and not the letter "O". Also, check you don't confuse your Z's with your 2's. Finally, you must make sure you enter in the (M) code first, directly after you enter in the name of your game.
Q: The new codes I entered are correct, so why are they still not working?
Sony sometimes makes different versions of a game, these games look the same and play the same but the programming of the games is different. If the original codes are not working for you then you will need to check if there are different versions of the codes. These new versions of codes will be on our web site named v1.1, v1.2, etc.
Q: I found some Action Replay MAX cheats on another web site and tried them but they don't work. Why?
Make sure that the codes are from the CODES section of the official Action Replay web site, www.codejunkies.com, or are from another official source such as PlayStation 2 magazines. Check you have entered official “Action Replay MAX” compatible cheats.
Q: I have to enter the codes every time I play a game – they won’t save to memory card. Why is this?
This is a known issue in an older version of MAX. Establish how long they’ve had Action Replay MAX. If it’s less than a year, we will replace it for free. You may also use the Contact Us feature on this site and request further information.
Q: I can’t get the codes to work.
Make sure you’re not confusing similar-looking characters, such as ‘Z’ and ‘2’.
Did you enter the Master Code, (M)? The cheat codes won’t work unless it’s activated.
If you’re using a version of Action Replay older than 3.14 and there’s a Version pre-3.14 Fix in the codes list, this must be used for the cheats to work. You can find the number of your Action Replay MAX on the underside of the PS2 CD; near the inner ring.
Q: I have just purchased a new slim line PSTwo console (SCPH 70012) and now my Action Replay MAX does not work; what should I do?
Unfortunately the new slim line PSTwo console (SCPH-70012) will not recognize any version of the Action Replay below version 3.30.
If you have just recently purchased a new PSTwo console and an Action Replay below version 3.30 you can send your Action Replay disc (you do not need to send the entire product) into the address below along with a copy of the original sales receipt for the Action Replay verifying that it has been purchased within the past 90 days and we can exchange your Action Replay Disc out for the most recent version of the AR MAX which does not require hardware to function. Please also include a short letter explaining the issue and be sure to include your return address.
Note: The hardware that came with your Action Replay will not function on the new PSTwo console. The version of Action Replay Max that you will be receiving does not require hardware to function

Q: I have just recently purchased a new PS2 console (SCPH 50001 or 50010) and it will not load my Action Replay MAX disc; what should I do?
Unfortunately, some newer versions of the PS2 console are not compatible with versions of Action Replay Max below Version 3.10. To check the version of your PS2, locate the sticker on the back of the system, beside the SONY logo there will be a number that starts with “SCPH”. If the following number is 50001 or 50010 then you have one of the new PS2 consoles. .
If this is the case, you can send your Action Replay disc (you do not need to send the entire product) into the address below along with a copy of the original sales receipt for the Action Replay verifying that it has been purchased within the past 90 days and we can exchange your Action Replay Disc out for the most recent version of the AR MAX which does not require hardware to function. Q: How do I access “Quick Mode” in the AR MAX?
To access Quick Mode, boot the Action Replay MAX to the Main Menu Screen. When “Insert Game Disc” pops up, switch out the Action Replay MAX disc for your game disc. This will automatically take you to Quick Mode provided the game offers it.
Please Note: If doing this does not automatically take you into Quick Mode then the codes for the game you are playing does NOT support that feature.
Q: When I try to connect to your server to get online updates I keep getting an “Error Connecting” message. What should I do?
If you are having problems connecting to the AR MAX server here are some troubleshooting tips to help you out.
- Check the connection:
The Network Adapter must be connected directly from the PS2 to the broadband modem using an RJ45 cable (standard dial up service is not compatible). If you have the PS2 connected to a router it may have trouble connecting to our server due to possible firewall features of the router. (w
Since we are unable to provide support for any router, please contact the router manufacturer, or consult the owner's manual for further assistance.
- Reset the modem:
Press the reset button on your modem, if you do not have a reset button on your modem then unplug the modem for 30-60 seconds to manually reset it.
If it is still not connecting go to settings in the AR MAX main menu and select “Internet Connection Settings”. Then change Auto Configure (DHCP) from Yes to No and enter the needed information (Be sure to save all changes when you have finished). If you do not have the information needed you will need to contact your Internet Service Provider for that information.
Please Note: If you are required to enter in a username and password when logging onto the internet, your ISP is NOT compatible with the AR MAX online update feature.
Q: I am able to connect to your server to download updates but once it starts downloading or saving my AR MAX freezes; why?
If you are not able to connect to our server using the AR MAX or if the AR MAX is freezing when you attempt to download updates you may want to reset the Action Replay Max hardware.
Resetting the ActionReplay Hardware:
- Insert the Action Replay disc.
- When the disc first begins to load press and hold the following buttons: L1, L2, R1, R2, START, and SELECT simultaneously.
- Continue to hold these buttons until a screen appears asking if you would like to reset the Action Replay Max hardware.
- Select "YES".
- Attempt to update your AR MAX again.
Q: When I attempt to load my game with codes activated the screen just stays black and does not load; why?
If the game is not loading, freezes, or displays a blank screen when you attempt to load it with codes activated, you will need to reduce the number of codes activated at one time.
In Quick Mode the number of codes that you are using is displayed when you press the start button.
If you are only using a small amount of codes (1-5) and your game is still not loading it may be due to:
- The game you're attempting to play may be a different version than the Action Replay codes were created for.
Examples:
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Bundle Pack)
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Bundle Pack) v1.2
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas [Second Edition]
- Tekken Tag Tournament
- Tekken Tag Tournament v1.1
- You may not be using the correct codes for the version of game you're attempting to play, or codes taht are only compatible the AR MAX.
Check the codelist for the game you are having problems with to see if there is a code titled “AR MAX Below 3.14 Fix”. If there is such a code, you will need to check the version number on your AR MAX disc to ensure you ARE using this code if your AR MAX is any version below 3.14 or you ARE NOT using this code if your AR MAX is version 3.14 or higher. To check the version of your Action Replay Max, look on the underside of the disc, you will see a dark blue ring towards the center; this is where you will find the version number.
Q: When I load up my AR MAX I get an “Insert AR MAX Hardware” error message; what can I do?
- Be sure you have your Action Replay MAX hardware inserted into memory card slot 2 of your PS2.
- Ensure the memory card is inserted in firmly.
If you do have your hardware firmly inserted in memory card slot 2 and your AR MAX is still not being recognized, you will need to reset the hardware.
This should fix the problem and allow the Action Replay Max to load.
Q: How do I add new codes to the Action Replay MAX?
How to add new codes to your Action Replay MAX:
- Insert your ActionReplay Max disc into the PlayStation 2 console.
- When the AR MAX loads, choose “Expert Mode”.
- Highlight and select “Add New Game”.
- Enter the name of the game you wish to add new codes for
- Highlight "OK" and press the X button.
- Enter the (M) code.
- Highlight "OK" and press the X button twice.
This will save your (M) code.
- From the code list, highlight the game you have just added.
- Press the X button to confirm the selection.
- Highlight and select “Add New Code”.
- Enter in the name of the code you would like to add.
- Highlight "OK" and press the X button.
- Enter in the code exactly as it appears on codejunkies.com.
- When you are finished highlight "OK" and press the X button.
(Be sure all lines of code have been entered before choosing "OK")
- Repeat this process for each new code you would like to add.
Q: How do I know whether to enter a Zero or the letter O? They both look the same!
The Action Replay Max uses an intelligent code system and will read the number zero and the letter 0 exactly the same way. There is no need to worry about which one you're entering.
Q: I am getting error messages when entering in new codes; why?
Common Error Messages:
- Invalid Data
- Code Already Exists
- Code is for Another Game
- Invalid Master Code
- Can’t Enter Master Code
- Invalid AR MAX Code
The Action Replay Max uses an intelligent code system and will know if the code is correct and will save the code accordingly. If you are getting an error message when entering in new codes then you are not entering the code in correctly.
If you believe the code being entered is correct, be the codes you're using are identical to the ones found on www.codejunkies.com.
Only the official codes posted on CodeJunkies.com are supported by Datel; Unofficial codes may not function properly on your Action Replay.
Please Note: If you are using an ActionReplay Max, be sure that you are using AR MAX codes and not Action Replay v2 codes; these codes are not compatible.
Q: The code that I want to use has 16 characters but the AR MAX will only allow me to enter in 13 characters; why?
There are two different versions of the Action Replay for the PlayStation 2. If you own the Action Replay MAX you will need to use the codes specifically made for the AR MAX, Action Replay V2 codes will NOT function on the MAX. Click on the link below to retrieve the proper codes for your AR MAX.

Q: When I add a new game to my AR MAX it disappears from the list, but then if I try to add it again it says “Code Already Exists”; why is this?
The Action Replay Max uses an intelligent code system and when you add new codes into your Action Replay MAX, the name of the game will automatically appear in the list. If this does not happen, or the name of the game seems to be “disappearing”, then you are most likely entering codes from a different region.
If you enter in codes from a differentregion they will be accepted by the Action Replay (because they are valid), however they will not appear on the US codelist as they are not US codes. You need to make sure you are getting your Action Replay MAX codes from the link below if you live in the US and are using a US AR MAX. European codes can NOT be used on a US AR MAX.
PlayStation 2 Action Replay MAX Codes (USA)
Q: When I activate codes for my game and then try to go online the game will not load or I get kicked off; what should I do?
Here at Datel we do not condone online cheating. We simply feel it is unfair to other online players and may ruin their online experience. For this reason we do not create, nor do we support, any codes that function while playing online.
Q: None of the codes for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City are working; why?
There are several different versions of the game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. (All three versions look and play the same.) The only difference between each version of the game is the programming. Slight changes in the way the game is 'coded' will cause Action Repay codes to not always function properly. In these instances a different set of ActionReplay codes is required for each game version released.
If you go to our website, www.codejunkies.com, you will see that we have three sets of codes for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, titled:
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Bundle Pack)
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Bundle Pack) v1.2
You will need to try each set of codes to determine which set will function with your version of the game.
Q: OOPS!!!! I've broken my Action Replay MAX disc; how can I purchase a replacement?
If you have broken your disc and would like to purchase a replacement please send your broken disc along with a check or money order for $9.99 plus $2.00 for shipping and handling to the address below and we will send you a new disc. Please also include a short letter explaining the problem and be sure to include your return address. Please make check payable to “Datel Design & Development”.
Please Note: If you no longer have your broken disc we will not be able to sell you a replacement, we will need the broken disc as proof of purchase.

Q: When I try to use the DVD Region X with my PAL DVD I get a “TV System Does Not Match” error message or it just simply will not work; why?
Unfortunately Sony has taken the ability to play PAL DVDs out of the US PS2 console. Because of this the DVD Region X will not allow you to play PAL DVDs. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
